Reverse vasectomy gives hope to surrendered Maoists in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh police is now encouraging reverse vasectomy of surrendered Maoists to strengthen family bonding among Naxalite couples returning to the mainstream so that they can have children and lead a normal family life.

While nearly four reverse vasectomy operations have already been done, two recently surrendered Maoists are being motivated by police to undergo the surgical procedure. The TOI report on January 1 — Surrendered Maoists in Chhattisgarh crave to have kids — motivated director general of police (DGP) Ramniwas to take the initiative. He instructed all SPs of Maoist-hit districts to encourage Naxalite couples to undergo reverse vasectomy surgery.

Maoist cadres have to undergo vasectomy before getting married in their camps. However, they repent their decision later in life when they surrender and try to connect with the mainstream. Talking to TOI, the DGP said although the provision of providing this facility to Maoist couples exist in the state and Centre's rehabilitation policy, there's a need to spread awareness across the state and police need to work actively over it. "This will encourage more Maoist couples to surrender so that they don't crave for family life, as the reverse vasectomy option is available," he said.

He said the SPs would now work on promotional activities and broadcast about the alternative. Chhattisgarh police would prepare and give a budget to particular hospitals so that the surrendered rebels could get themselves registered and directly approach them for reverse vasectomy.

"Sterilization in Maoist camps are often lethal and damages nerves. Couples often can't undergo the advanced surgery and remain childless," DGP said, adding the state police would also encourage Maoists to surrender and get their marriages arranged under the rehabilitation policy.

Life for Sonu Korsa and Pandu Lekam, the two recently surrendered Maoists in Bijapur and Narayanpur districts will change forever. "We had no clue about a technique called reverse vasectomy. I am hopeful of having my own child instead of craving for one or thinking of adoption," Pandu, working as a secret homeguard for the guerrillas told TOI over phone from Bijapur.

Pandu unwillingly underwent vasectomy as Maoist commanders don't want couples to have kids or any emotional attachment that can hinder revolutionary movement.

"The couple has undergone required tests at a hospital in capital and would undergo reverse vasectomy surgery on January 15 and 16," Prashant Agrawal, Bijapur SP said.

80% surgeries successful:

Speaking about the success rate, Dr Sunil Kalda, prominent plastic and cosmetic surgeon said more than 80% cases of reverse vasectomy are successful and they succeed in having more than one child. The cost of the surgery is around Rs 30,000. "It is done through micro-surgery techniques which is more successful and has less chances of failure," Dr Kalda said.

R K Vij, additional director general (Naxalite operations) said rehabilitation of surrendered Maoists has to be addressed with sensitivity and needs regular follow-up to keep them hooked to the mainstream. "Reverse vasectomy will create a family bond and a long-lasting effect on cadres."
