Surrendered Maoists in Chhattisgarh crave to have kids

RAIPUR: A frail, blank-face, looking into the infinity would have never imagined that she would one day drop down the bullet-filled rifle and desire to carry a child in those weathered hands.

Budhi Korsa, 24, and Vimla Lekam, 23, are the two women Maoists who recently surrendered along with their husbands Sonu Korsa and Pandu Lekam.

In an exclusive conversation with TOI, the couples said that the men were forced to undergo vasectomy when they presented a proposal for marriage before the senior rebel commanders. And now that they are trying to become a part of the mainstream society, they crave for children.

"It's mandatory for all men to undergo vasectomy at a local hospital before they get married as according to commanders, having kids would create emotional attachment and desire to provide them a better life out of darkness of forests. They preach of not to get distracted of the goal to have kids," a 24-year-old Sonu, who is a Class 12th pass out, most educated among the four, said

While there are many rehabilitation policies for surrendered Maoists which are in a way also encouraging more of them to surrender, perhaps introduction of an adoption policy would boost up the morale of those resisting coming forward.

"Lately, there are more of women recruitment going on in their camps and are mainly preferred for assisting the high-level commanders but they are very unsafe. Earlier women were asked to undergo sterilization but as it affects their health, the seniors chose men for vasectomy. We didn't realize then, about our future, but now, it has created a void in life not to have kids. If possible we would go for adoption or reverse vasectomy," a hopeful yet quiet Vimla told TOI.

They said that they were forced to join the rebel ranks at the age of 18 in 2007 when the group of Maoists visited their villages for recruitment and made it mandatory that one young member from each family will have to join their military or their parents will be killed.

"Though I joined them, my parents were anyway killed and I wasn't allowed to visit home for months. As the life in forests is isolated, very tough and is spent in a hideout, the hardships frustrate many and they decide to quit. Presently, there are 1600 Maoists in Bastar of which more than 500 want to return and lead a normal 'life'," Sonu said.

Talking to TOI, R K Vij, additional director general (naxal operations) said, "Though Chhattisgarh police has started working further improving rehabilitation policy for Maoists, process of reverse vasectomy is also open on request. Like there were two surrendered Maoists who underwent reverse vasectomy last year, the option is open for these couples as well. The government on its expense would provide them the facility so that they can have kids."

He confirmed that the rehabilitation policy has surely revived confidence of rebels to surrender and comparatively Maoists from higher cadre ranks have surrendered more this year with fairly good number.
