Yeddyurappa writes to Karnataka assembly speaker for merger with BJP

BANGALORE: Getting the ball rolling for his return to the BJP, BS Yeddyurappa wrote to assembly speaker on Friday that four of the six MLAs of his Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) will join the parent party.

B R Patil and Guru Patil Shiraval have kept away from the merger. This will not affect their assembly membership. Yeddyurappa will not attract provisions of the anti-defection law either because two-thirds of the party's six MLAs have joined the BJP.

After receiving the petition, speaker Kagodu Thimmappa said he will go through the provisions of law and decide. With Yeddyurappa merging his one-year-old KJP, the BJP's strength in the assembly will increase to 44, making it eligible for the status of the main opposition party, now held by the JD(S).

Yeddyurappa is expected to visit the BJP office shortly. This will be followed by a big rally in Davanagere on January 18 to formalize the merger.

Yeddyurappa, who faces corruption cases, is unlikely to be given a post. Speaking to reporters in Mysore, state BJP president Prahlad Joshi said: "The BJP's stand is that leaders involved in scams, or those who are tainted, should not hold any constitutional position till cases against them are cleared.''

Joshi dismissed as "hypothetical" a question whether Yeddyurappa would be given a post if the BJP comes to power at the Centre. He claimed the BJP had officially not criticized Yeddyurappa after he left. "If some individuals criticized Yeddyurappa, it was their personal opinion, and not the party's."
