WhatsApp audio message puts Kaushik in controversy

HARIDWAR: An audio message on WhatsApp has landed former minister and BJP legislator Madan Kaushik in the thick of controversy. In the message, Kaushik and one of his supporters, Sushil Tyagi, are reportedly heard making remarks that smacked of regionalism and also discussing supporting a candidate of a rival party. The MLA has been quick to term it as a "politically motivated move" to malign his image and that of BJP before the Lok Sabha polls.

According to sources, Kaushik and Tyagi can be heard in the message talking about supporting a Lok Sabha candidate from the "plains" rather than "the hills". It also has the two discussing that people should vote for Ambrish Kumar if he contests from the Haridwar seat as a BSP candidate.

Earlier, Kumar was trying to get a BSP ticket from the Haridwar seat. He joined Congress after failing to get a BSP ticket.

The message apparently also has a discussion between the two on CM Harish Rawat and his family belonging to the hills and why should people of Haridwar vote for them if they contest from a seat in the plains.

On his part, Tyagi has lodged a complaint in this regard at Roorkee Kotwali police station. The matter has been handed over to the Special Operation Group team of the local police to find out the details relating to the message.

Kaushik was among the frontrunners for party ticket from Haridwar Lok Sabha seat but BJP announced former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' as its nominee. After initial reluctance, Kaushik joined Nishank's poll campaign.

"It seems that things said on different occasions have been put together in this three-minute long clip," Kaushik told TOI. He termed it as "fake" and an effort to dent his image. The BJP leader claimed that the matter has also been reported to Roorkee police and those behind the act would soon be exposed.

Tyagi suspected that some BJP leaders have helped members of rival parties, Congress, SP and BSP in the matter. He has sought a thorough probe into the matter.

Meanwhile, SP (rural) Ajai Singh said the SOG has been asked to look into the matter and check the "genuineness" of the audio clip.
