Rajendra Agarwal, BJP Lok Sabha candidate from the Meerut-Hapur constituency, found villagers at Kunda shouting, "MP, MLA, Mayor, go back!"
Agarwal was accompanied by Meerut Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia and other leaders.
The visitors faced a volley of questions, and were hard-pressed to explain what they had done for the area in the past five years.
Villagers said leaders have failed to bring development to their villages, and stood atop some of the vehicles that were part of the leader's cavalcade.
As the motorcade reached Indrapuram Colony, women staged a protest. In Achronda village, some women hurled their bangles at the campaigners. In Dungrawali, villagers said poor sanitation had heightened the risk of epidemics. The melee in this village left some vehicles damaged.
Sanjeev Baliyan, BJP candidate from Muzaffarnagar, also found public ire directed at him as his vehicle returned from an election campaign meeting at Kutbi village. Near Purbaliyan village, stones were pelted at the motorcade.
Superintendent of Police Bhravan Kumar Singh of Muzaffarnagar, said, "A child had thrown a stone to hit a pigeon, but the stone landed on the vehicle and damaged its window."
Rajendra Agarwal blamed the incident in Meerut on the Samajwadi Party. "The attack was engineered by local SP leaders. I have never ignored this region," he said.
Jaiveer Singh, district president of the SP, however washed his hands of the incident, saying, "I am not even aware of what happened, forget about my involvement."
