"Our business was doing well prior to IPL 2013. It dropped drastically when the spot fixing scandal came to light," said Paras Anand, owner of popular cricket equipment brand SG.
Apart from supplying sports goods across the country, the products manufactured in Meerut are also sent abroad. Jatin Sreen, owner of Sareen Sports (SS), another popular cricket equipment brand, said, "Both domestic and foreign markets are on decline. The sports industry has been affected by the IPL spot fixing scandal and we are looking forward to this edition of the tournament for an increase in sales." India's recent defeat in the T20 world cup final was also claimed to be one of the reasons which brought down the gusto of cricket enthusiasts.
Rakesh Mahajan, owner of BDM, a sports manufacturing company, said, "Though the sale of cricket goods has fallen, there has been an increase in demand for badminton goods." He also claimed that since the IPL scandal came to light, parents have dissuaded their children from joining cricket, which is why more students are enrolling in badminton in the sports academy.
"The enthusiasm of students does not decrease due to scandals. However, the perception of the parents/guardians changes and they tell their kids not to opt for cricket. Due to this, less number of students enroll themselves in cricket," said Sanjay Rastogi, senior coach at Meerut college cricket academy.
Jatin Sareen claimed that during the IPL season, watching cricket takes precedence over of playing cricket. That is why the sports goods manufacturers were waiting for this year's IPL to come to an end.
