Massive security umbrella over Chhattisgarh's red hot Bastar

RAIPUR: Red patches of Maoist hotbed in Chhattisgarh's tribal Bastar, which goes to polls in the first phase on April 10, witnesses a deafening silence amid massive campaigns across the country, with more than 300 polling booths declared hypersensitive and nearly 220 being shifted to 'safer' areas.

Election Commission of India has recently approved shifting of these booths, located at hypersensitive trouble-prone areas, to places near the market, schools and police stations for security reasons, sources at state electoral office said. Election authorities are also making arrangements for 'web-cast' from selected polling booths where it is technically feasible.

Due to shifting of booths, there may be hundreds of people who would then have to walk down more than 20 kilometers to cast their votes in the scorching heat without any special conveyance arrangements. About 99 polling booths at Bijapur, 56 at Dantewada, 60 at Konta and other at Narayanpur, Jagdalpur, Kondagaon are among those to be shifted near populated safer zones. However, other polling booths at sensitive and hyper-sensitive parts would be covered under massive security as well.

Police administration has thrown a massive security umbrella over Bastar, where polling is scheduled on April 10, due to Maoist threat and keeping in mind the past experiences during polls. A senior police official said that due to several recent Maoist incidents, including last year's May 25 attack in which senior Congress leaders were killed, Bastar constituency alone will go to polls in the first phase to ensure sufficient availability of security forces.

Joint parties of Central Reserve Police Force, state police, Border Security Force have already begun search operations to unearth Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and landmines, which always posed major threat for polling parties going through those routes.

Locals quoting it as 'chunavi sargarmi nahi chunavi khamoshi hai yahan' , said that like other parts of state, parts of Bastar were as quiet as they were and remain unfazed with poll fever, due to persistent Maoist threats and activities.

THREAT: Recently reports of threat from Maoist-infested Barsoor region came to the fore where residents in villages, at the banks of Indravati River were asked to boycott polls. During 2013 assembly elections, these locals were facilitated with boats so that they could cross the river and cast votes, but a day before polls, Maoists had sunk all boats in water. This led to zero voting in neighbouring areas like Purangel, Alnar, Kidriras and others.

However, as per electoral officials water level in the river isn't high and could be easily crossed which is why Maoists were threatening the locals.

EMERGENCY: According to officials, arrangement of two air-ambulances and four ambulances with advance life support system would be made to handle any untoward incident on April 10.
