Modi, Kejriwal become Time's 'most influential' people thanks to dodgy poll and online fan club

WASHINGTON: The American humorist Erma Bombeck once quipped that she stopped trusting opinion poll surveys after reading that 63 per cent of women had affairs during their lunch hour; she said had never met a woman in her life who would give up lunch for sex.

Jokes aside, her caustic observation has hardly stopped the media from plying dodgy polls, an exercise that has become even more vigorous with the arrival of the online media, where public opinion can be gathered in an instant with the click of a mouse.

One such poll conducted by Time magazine this week has resulted in two Indian politicians — Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal — making it to the top of "TIME 100 annual lists of the most influential people in the world." Apparently, they are more "influential" than singer Katy Perry who is in third place, followed by Justin Bieber at fourth, neither of whom are particularly vital to the daily life of Americans. As another American commentator joked about the will of the people: It wasn't that long ago that we were swept away by the Macarena. Time's own Person of the Year, Pope Francis, is in 25th place.

Time magazine explained that though the final TIME 100 list of the most influential people of the year worldwide is ultimately chosen by the editors, the magazine "seeks the input of readers in an online poll." But those who monitor the polls say the exercise is essentially flawed. It can be manipulated by a volunteer force of fanboys (and fan girls) sitting behind a computer and clicking away; each click records as a vote.

Dallas-based multi-faith peace activist Mike Ghouse says he did exactly that to confirm his suspicion, clicking several times from the same computer to record multiple votes. "This is a serious issue of integrity of the Time Magazine," he said in an email. "Can Time audit its computers to determine how many clicks have come from the same computer?"

Ghouse recorded the following observations on his blog: When Modi reached a record number of votes at 867,341 by 5:54pm on April 21, 64% of them said YES to include him on the TIME 100 where as 36% said NO. The Kejriwal warriors and the secular Indians hit the gas to the floor, and gave 489,582 votes and 78% of them said YES while 22% said NO.

Modi Sena (army) would not take that kindly, and flipped Kejriwal down to 28.9% YES and 71.1 NO today at 3:00pm. Things turned around immediately, and the Kejriwal Warriors went to war big time, and pulled Modi down to 53.5% at 5:04pm PM today, and lifting Kejriwal to 54.6% YES.

It was a war, you could clearly see who side was on the offensive, and each side has slaughtered the other at different times.
