Bastar Maoist attack: Cannot rule out political conspiracy, says NIA

RAIPUR: At a time when the state is to observe the first anniversary of Bastar's Maoist massacre that killed frontline Congress leaders on May 25 last year, a row has erupted over the current status of investigation by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and speculations are rife about political conspiracy behind the attack.

Right from the beginning when NIA took up its probe, there were media speculations about NIA submitting its report while the investigating agency has been repeatedly clarifying that being a prosecuting agency, its job is to file charge-sheet in the court on the basis of findings of investigations.

"NIA is not supposed to submit its report to anyone, neither to Centre nor to state. We will file charge-sheet at a designated court in Bilaspur within a month," a senior NIA official told TOI.

Discounting local media reports that NIA has concluded that in its Bastar massacre probe, no political conspiracy was involved, NIA official said, "In an investigation of such scale and magnitude, probe agencies always look into all possible angles, including that of conspiracy. As of now, we don't have anything to substantiate such theories. Political conspiracy, if any, would be revealed only after senior Maoist leaders involved in attack are arrested," the official said.

While the investigations were put on hold owing to elections and rains, the NIA official said that eight accused, including two surrendered, have been arrested from Sukma and Bastar.

With the help of surrendered senior Maoist leader GVK Prasad alias Gudsa Usendi, NIA has identified about 97 main accused and few groups of Maoists and others. "NIA has been interrogating Maoists arrested from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The propaganda that NIA is groping in dark is unfounded," he added.

Darbha valley attack on May 25 last year had eliminated 27 people including the then state Congress president Nandkumar Patel, his son Dinesh, former Union minister VC Shukla, senior Congress leader Mahendra Karma and former legislator Uday Mudaliyar while they were returning from Sukma after attending a Congress parivartan rally.
