After its eighth meeting, committee chairman Nirmala Buch said 57 cases were reviewed and took a decision on 36 of them.
In May 2012, state government had set up the committee, headed by former Madhya Pradesh chief secretary Nirmala Buch, following an agreement reached with Maoists for the release of the then Sukma district collector Alex Paul Menon, who was abducted by the rebels.
The purpose of the committee is to review cases of under-trials, who are in jail for two years or more, including those facing charges under Chhattisgarh Public Security Act. The first meeting of the committee was held on May 3, 2012, the day Menon was released by Naxalites after 12 days in captivity.
"The committee has minutely studied and reviewed every legal aspect in each of the cases, before making recommendations to the government. We have considered various crucial factors including related incidents and sections etc while reviewing," Buch said here after the meeting. She said the committee was making sincere efforts to meet every month in order to review all the pending cases.
According to information, seven meetings of standing committee had been held, in which 'release on bail' was recommended in 189 cases. This includes 61 cases, in which the prisoners were released on bail, and in 48 cases, under-trials were given a clean chit. In 13 other cases, courts had sentenced the prisoners, an official here said.
The meeting was attended by chief secretary of Chhattisgarh government Vivek Dhand, DGP AN Upadhyay, ACS (home) NK Aswal and secretary (home) Ashok Juneja.
