Haunted by poll debacle in 1957, former PM changed his parliamentary constituency

IBRAHIMPATTI (BALLIA): Politicians usually prefer to contest the crucial make or break Lok Sabha polls from their bastions and pocket borough, and it is only in the worst case, when they foray to new seats, either to help their immediate family members carve a political identity or silence their critics.

However, the same may not hold true for Ibrahimpatti - the ancestral and birth place of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar , which comes under the Salempur parliamentary constituency.

It was in 1957, when Chandra Shekhar made his electoral debut from (the then) Rasra Lok Sabha seat, which gradually was deleted from the list of parliamentary constituencies following the first delimitation. In the 1957 elections, Chandrashekhar contested on the ticket of Praja Socialist Party, but lost to Sarju Pande of the Communist Party of India (34.57% votes), and Dr Shaukatullah Shah Ansari of the Congress, who bagged 29.43% of the total votes polled. Chandra Shekhar, who secured the third spot could garner only 20% of the votes.

"The defeat in the elections was enough to give a shock to Chandra Shekhar, who made Ballia his political karmabhoomi and since 1977 retained the seat till his death," said Anoop Kumar, a resident of Belthara Road in Ballia.

However, in this Lok Sabha elections, the identity of Jhopdi - the ancestral house of Chandra Shekhar is itself under a cloud, as multiple power centres have appeared on the electoral horizon, thereby indicating that all is certainly not well within the Jhopdi household, and fissures are gradually getting visible in eyes of the public.

"Earlier, during the days of Chandra Shekhar, only one procession used to emanate from Jhopdi on the day of filing of nominations. However, this time, Jhopdi witnessed two such processions, and the occasions were filing of nomination papers," said Anoop Kumar, and further added that sitting MP and Samajwadi Party candidate filed nomination papers, seeking a third-term from Ballia, Ravi Shankar Singh alias Pappu, who is contesting from neighbouring Salempur Lok Sabha seat also filed his nomination papers. Ravi Shankar Singh is the grandson of Chandra Shekhar's brother.

The sordid tales of infighting and political one-upmanship in the family of the former prime minister did not end here. In fact in 2014 elections, Pankaj Shahar, the elder son of the ex-PM tried to get a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party, but eventually could not get the ticket, which ultimately went to Bharat Singh. Similarly, Pravin Singh, nephew of Chandra Shekhar was in touch with the Congress to get the party ticket, but was unable to get it.

However, despite all the political upheavals, which the first family of Ballia faced in recent times, Samajwadi Party leaders are confident that Neeraj would be able to score a hat-trick. Senior

SP leader Ambika Chaudhary told Times Of India that the good work done by the UP government and by the MP would be awarded by the voters of Ballia. However, sources in the SP said that unlike past elections, when Neeraj virtually had cakewalks with the Muslims, Thakurs, Bhoomihaars and Yadavs voting enmasse, Lok Sabha elections 2014 for SP in general and Neeraj Shekhar in particular would certainly not be a smooth affairs.
