The sisters -- M Keerthika, 18, and M Saranya, 17 -- were found hanging from the roof their house on Sunday morning. Saranya and Keerthika scored 930 and 928 marks and claimed the first and the second ranks respectively at the Government Girls' Higher Secondary School in Kammapuram. The results of the plus two exams were announced on Friday.
They were keen on continuing their studies. But their father allegedly decided to marry off Keerthika and send Saranya for further studies, police said.
The sisters allegedly overheard their father, Murugesan, a carpenter, conveying the decision to others in the family on Saturday night. He said he could not afford to provide education to both the girls. After overhearing their father's decision, the girls decided to end their lives, police said.
They were alone at home on Sunday morning after their parents and brother went to attend a festival in a nearby temple. They committed suicide by hanging themselves from the roof of the house by using their dupattas, police said.
Their brother, M Prakesh, is a Class 10 student at a government school in the area.
The Kammapuram police registered a case and began investigations.
