Social media slams Akhilesh’s comment on rape, lawlessness in UP

LUCKNOW: On Friday, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's comment on being asked about the law and order situation in UP by a journalist called for serious reactions from the netizens. Social media users slammed Akhilesh Yadav and equated his comment with his father's "boys make mistakes" comment.

The three horrific cases of assault on women reported this week in the state left citizens questioning the state machinery and when a journalist on Friday asked the youngest chief minister of the state about the situation, he replied: "You're safe, right? You feel secure?"

The insensitive comment went viral and netizens slammed the Samajwadi Party government for the total lawlessness in the state. With "UP Govt" trending across India, CM Akhilesh Yadav was put to task as tweeples asked some tough questions. Caricatures and messages to the official account of the chief minister were galore. Will the CM listen to the netizens, at least? Many doubted.

Twitter was abuzz with comments even as three of the top ten all-India trending topics were related to Badaun rape and UP government's failure in protecting women.

There were many who knocked the doors of the Prime Minister for strict action.

The unedited pictures of the Badaun rape victims were also circulated in the social media which led to serious slamming of the state government.

Commenting on the lawlessness and the hope for justice, the father of one of the girls who was killed in Badaun told mediapersons that the family has little faith that it will get justice from the state government because the men accused belong to the same community as the chief minister.

Some equated Akhilesh's comment with Mulayam Singh's earlier comment that "rapes happen ... boys commit mistakes... they shouldn't be hanged..."

Irony is that the three cases were reported from Badaun, Etawah and Azamgarh — all represented by the Samajwadi Party and seen as a stronghold of the Yadav family.
