GOPESHWAR (Uttarakhand): Pilgrimage to Badrinath shrine in Garhwal Himalayas resumed on Wednesday as the weather cleared up even as landslides blocked the pedestrian road between Sonprayag and Gaurikund on way to Kedarnath where the yatra has been suspended till May 16. A convoy of vehicles carrying pilgrims left for Badrinath on Wednesday after the BRO cleared the motor road between Joshimath and the Himalayan shrine blocked by mud and slush following snowfall and rain on Tuesday, Chamoli district magistrate S A Murugeshan said.

With the road leading to the temple cleared and improvement in weather, there is no restriction on the movement of yatris heading for Badrinath now, he said.

However, for safety reasons, the administration is keeping an eye on the road between Joshimath and Badrinath to guard pilgrims against any trouble, he said.

There is no chance of Kedarnath yatra being resumed before May 17 as fresh landslips have occurred between Gaurikund and Sonprayag en route to the shrine, Rudraprayag district magistrate Raghav Langar said.

Yatra to Kedarnath has been suspended for the last four days due to inclement weather whereas pilgrimage to Badrinath had come to a halt on Tuesday after snowfall at Nar Narayan Parbat in whose lap the famous temple is located.

The portals of Kedarnath and Badrinath, two major shrines of the famous char dhams had reopened after a six-month winter break on May 4 and 5 respectively.
