The company has decided to adopt Nagaram, the site of the explosion that has claimed 19 lives so far, and develop it as model village with all amenities.
The compensation includes Rs 20 lakh for the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to each of the 19 injured, totaling to Rs. 3.89 crore. The disbursement of compensation would begin on Monday.
Expressing sadness at the "tragic" loss of lives and concern over the incident, company chairman B C Tripathi said the affected pipeline linking Tatipaka and Kondapalli was certified for safety by national as well as international agencies and the company followed a rigorous safety drill. Both GAIL and the oil ministry has instituted separate inquiries into the incident.
Tripathi said foot-patrols have been sent to inspect the pipeline network in the Krishna-Godavari region. GAIL's internal audit group has been asked to check various pipeline systems across the country and submit a report within a fortnight. An international consultant would also be appointed for a third-party audit of pipeline safety.
A senior company official, executive director (human resources) Amit Ray, the nodal officer for coordinating the relief and rehabilitation measures. The senior executive's appointment would help hasten the process and establish better co-ordination with local authorities, government and villagers.
According to relief package, GAIL would bear all medical expenses on treatment of all injured persons and best possible medical care will be provided. GAIL has established helpdesks at Apollo Hospital and Trust Hospital at Kakinada, KIMS Hospital at Amlapuram and Balbolini Hospital at Rajahmunhry, where the injured are being treated.
GAIL would open a fixed deposit account of Rs 5 lakh in a bank in the name of each person in banks who suffered permanent disability so that they would have subsistence benefits through monthly income schemes.
The value of property and crops damaged in the explosion is being assessed in consultation with the district authorities and GAIL would fully compensate the cost. It has also put up temporary shelters and providing food to the 35 affected families.
