CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday condoled the death of 24 young engineering students from Hyderabad, who were washed away in the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

"It is indeed heartbreaking to hear of young lives full of hope and potential being cruelly snatched away," she said in her condolence message.

The chief minister said it was with immense sadness that she offered her condolences to the bereaved families. "I pray that the Almighty may grant strength and courage to their families to bear this tragic loss," she said.

The students, who were on tour, were killed in a flashflood after authorities of the Larji dam opened the sluice gates.
