PUDUCHERRY: An electrician from Puducherry has been stranded in a room, along with four other Indians, in Iraq for the past three days following intense fight between the army and ISIS militants. His wife and relatives have appealed to the Union and Puducherry governments to ensure his safe return at the earliest.

Ziyabudeen, 36, from Tiruvannamalai, who settled in Puducherry after marrying Mariam Bee, 35, went to Iraq on February 22 this year. He used to make calls to his wife regularly and was expected to return after a year.

When Mariam Bee got a call from Ziyabudeen three days ago at an odd hour she sensed that something was wrong. Her fears proved right as her husband revealed that he was stranded in his room in Erbil city after ISIS militants took control over parts of the country.

He told her that four other Indians, including one from Tamil Nadu (Trichy district), had been with him. Ziyabudeen and others were scarred to venture out as the army and the militant group were engaged in an intense battle. "When Ziyabudeen spoke to me, he said he and others were safe. He said they were scarred to venture out," Mariam Bee said.

The electrician would not be able to return to India as his passport and other documents are with his employer. "Indian authorities have to exert pressure on their Iraqi counterparts and ensure that all stranded people are provided with valid documents so that they can return to India," she said.

This was the second overseas assignment for Ziyabudeen. Earlier, he had worked as an electrician in Saudi Arabia from 2007 to 2012. He retuned to Puducherry and joined a private company. Two years later, he took up an assignment in Iraq. "He is the sole breadwinner of the family. He had no other option than to seek overseas employment to make both ends meet," she said.

The couple has two children -- Z Abul Rahman, 12, and Z Sohul, 1.

Mariam Bee has decided to meet Lt Governor Virendra Kataria, chief minister N Rangasamy and other ministers and officials of the territorial administration to submit a memorandum seeking the intervention of the government to ensure his safe return.
