Siddaramaiah accuses Jayalalithaa of politicizing Cauvery issue

MYSORE: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday alleged that Jayalalithaa is trying to politicize the Cauvery river water dispute and said it is not possible for the Union government to constitute the Cauvery water management board at this juncture. Talking to reporters here, Siddaramaiah was reacting to the letter written by his Tamil Nadu counter part asking the Prime Minister to constitute the water management board.

"Jayalalithaa is repeatedly trying to politicize the issue with an intention to keep it alive and afresh in people's mind'', he added.

He said he has already written twice to the PM and met him over the issue where he requested the PM not to heed to the Tamil Nadu CM's request and keep the constitution of board in abeyance."Prime minister has conveyed to me that there is no such proposal before the Union government and even water resource minister denied that the Centre is going to constitute the board", he claimed and said that the state government will not allow the Centre to constitute the board.

Siddaramaiah said in the Cauvery tribunal order, tribunal has mooted the constitution of such a board for the better management of the water distribution and it has not given any direction on this score. Tamil Nadu government has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court in this regard and it is pending for the disposal, he pointed out and said at present the committee constituted at the behest of the Supreme Court consists of chief secretaries of the respective riparian states and is headed by the central water resource ministry secretary. At present the water distribution and monitoring is being done under the supervision of this committee, he disclosed and said the Supreme court has rejected Tamil Nadu's petition questioning the constitution of this committee.

Siddaramaiah said that Tamil Nadu is fixed a quota of 197 tmc ft of water as per the tribunal's order, but in the previous monsoon year Tamil Nadu received more than 260 tmc ft of . This was the reason Supreme Court rejected the interim petition of Tamil Nadu questioning various aspects of the tribunal's recommendations, he said .

Under present circumstances, the Union government cannot constitute the water management board till all the applications and petitions questioning the tribunal's award are disposed off by the apex court. " We will not allow the Union government to circumvent the law and constitute the board", he reiterated .
