10 things Vaidik said about his meeting with Hafiz Saeed

The row over the meeting of journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik with 26/11 terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed on Tuesday stalled Parliament for the second consecutive day, with government stating it has nothing to do with it. It termed it as "diplomatic misadventure of a private individual". Reports said Ved Pratap Vaidik, a freelance journalist, had met the Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief in Lahore on July 2 while touring Pakistan along with a group of journalists and politicians invited by a peace research institute.

Here are the top 10 things you need to know about what Vaidik has said in his defence:

1. "When I was in Pakistan, the media criticism of Hafiz Saeed in India came up for discussion. It was then that a Pakistani journalist asked me if I would like to meet Saeed in person. I agreed and a call was immediately made to fix the meeting," he told TOI, denying any other motive to his appointment with the most-wanted terrorist.

2. Refuting allegations that he had met Saeed as an envoy of the Narendra Modi government, Vaidik told TOI that his interface with the Jamaat-ud-Dawa boss was driven only by journalistic considerations. "I would like to tell Congress, which is alleging that I met him on behalf of the government, to attack the Modi regime directly rather than train its guns from my shoulders."

3. "I have met enemies of the country in the past ... my experience says resolution of conflict is possible not through the gun but talks," he said.

4. "I put my life in danger. Congress leaders are making a noise in Parliament. Agar unke neta milne jaate toh unka pajama geela ho jata, stretcher pe lana padta. (If one on their leaders had gone to meet him, they would have peed in their pajamas; they would have had to be brought back in stretchers). They can raise the issue in the Parliament but nothing will come out of it," Vaidik was quoted as telling ANI.

5. Asked if he was advocating talks with Saeed, Vaidik said, "I am neither the prime minister not the government's representative ... It is for the government, Army chief, police and the courts to discharge their responsibilities in this regard," he underlined.

6. Regarding the reports of him saying that Jammu and Kashmir should get independence, he told Headlines Today, "I never said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir should be separated from India. I said it would be utter stupidity. What I talked about is the Azadi in that interview, which nobody is showing. I said the way I am enjoying my azadi in Delhi and Mian Nawaz Sharif enjoys his azadi in Islamabad, similarly Sardar Qayoom should enjoy his azadi in Muzaffarabad. And Omar Abdullah should enjoy his azadi in Srinagar."

7. "I have never been a special envoy for any PM; I am my own envoy. I have been meeting presidents and PMs of many countries and rebel forces. I wasn't envoy of any PM," Ved Pratap Vaidik was quoted as telling ANI.

8. "Hafiz Saeed asked me about (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi. He said Modi is dangerous and now he has become the Prime Minister of India. He said that Modi is dangerous for the whole of South Asia. I said that his thinking is not right. There is no need to fear Modi," media reports said, quoting Vaidik on his chat with the LeT founder.

9. "I am a known name in Pakistan. My writings and articles are translated and reproduced in Pakistani media. In my 55 years of journalistic career, I have not declined to meet anyone. I have met Maoist leaders and LTTE leaders including Prabhakaran," said Vaidik. "I wanted to analyse Saeed's mind and know why he committed heinous crimes against India," Vaidik told TOI.

10. "I am a man of ideas. Men of ideas like Rousseau and Karl Marx were not of any country alone," he said.
