Congress does not have numbers to claim leader of opposition post, attorney general tells Speaker

NEW DELHI: Congress is not eligible for the post of leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha as it does not have the numbers for the claim, the attorney general has said.

The attorney general has sent his views to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who had sought legal opinion on Congress's plea for the leader of opposition post.

The Congress, however, played down the AG's opinion and said the law officer's opinion was not the last word.

"Attorney general's view is not binding on the House," Congress leader Manish Tewari told Times Now reacting to the news.

Should Congress be given the leader of opposition post?

"The second largest party in Parliament needs to be recognized," Manish Tewari said adding, "the party feels it has rightful claim to the post."
