LUCKNOW: On every Rakshabandhan, Sunita Dhonkaria used to send a Rakhi to his brother - Captain Amit Bharadwaj wishing him good luck and fortune. On May 17, 1999, Amit sacrificed his life, while defending the nation's borders in the icy heights of Kargil' leaving his family members and relatives shell-shocked. However, despite the death of his dear brother, Sunita has not stopped the practice of sending Rakhis to his brother's battalion, and sends Rakhis virtually for the entire battalion.

Speaking to TOI, Sunita Dhonkaria (who is now settled in Jaipur), said, "Initially, I used the Rakhi to Amit. And in 1999, I was contemplating a special Rakhi, as it was coinciding with Independence Day (August 15). However, destiny had something else in store for us and Amit's funeral was held on July 15 (his body was found after almost 56 days). It was on this occasion that I decided to send a Rakhi to each and every member of Amit's battalion." She further added that for the last 15 years, she has been sensing 100 Rakhis to her brother's battalion.

When the Kargil conflict completed 5 years, Amit's battalion was posted in Assam, and Sunita went there to celebrate Rakshabandhan with her extended family. "From 2006 to 2009, Amit's battalion was posted in Jaipur, and during that period, Rakshabandhan celebrations had some special meaning for each and everyone of us."

Amit's sister further added that many friends of Amit, who have now migrated to other places still remember me on the day of Rakshabandhan, and the tradition of sending Rakhi still flourishes. "Some of Amit's friends were posted in Baramullah, Gaya and even went out of the battalion, but the thread of Rakhi helps us to maintain the special bond," said Sunita, and added that Rakshabandhan is one of the festivals, which is eagerly awaited by her.

Narrating another story about her brother's battalion, Sunita said, "During the stay of Amit's battalion in Jaipur, the priest of battalion showed something unique to me, which I did not imagine. The priest had collected the Rakhis sent by me to the battalion each year in a different envelope, and showed them to me. I was simply overwhelmed by his efforts and virtually felt short of words in thanking him for his noble gesture."

The sister of the Kargil martyr on this occasion also stated that whenever any friend of Amit visits Jaipur, they prefer to stay at their friend's place instead of availing the facility of the Army mess or any hotel. "This is the strength of Rakhi, which has been bonding us for the past many years, and would continue to do so in the future," said Sunita.
