NEW DELHI: As Rapti, Saryu and Ghaghra rivers continued to flow above danger mark, the Center on Sunday upgraded level of flood alerts calling it an 'unprecedented flood situation' for many areas in eastern and northeastern Uttar Pradesh.
Hundreds of villages in Balrampur, Sitapur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri and Bara Banki are facing threats of being flooded as heavy rains in catchment areas of the Himalayan rivers continued for long in the past 48 hours. Floods in many rivers in Nepal made the situation worse in Uttar Pradesh.
While Saryu and Ghaghra are flowing quite precariously, the river Rapti on Sunday broke its 14 year old record. It was flowing at 105.41 meters — 0.79 meters above its danger level of 104.62 meters — with a "rising trend". Its previous high of 105.25 meters was recorded on September 11, 2000.
Taking in view the "rising trend" of the river Rapti, the Central Water Commission (CWC) — which monitors water level in rivers across the country — upgraded the alert for Balrampur district from "high flood situation" on Saturday to "unprecedented flood situation" on Sunday.
Villages in northeastern states and Bihar too faced the danger of being flooded due to incessant rains. Many low lying areas in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Bihar continued to be under water on Sunday.
Various district towns in Bihar and most of the areas even in the state capital Patna were under water due to heavy rains and bad drainage network. Water logging in urban areas, including residential colonies, even poses threat of epidemic once water recedes.
The Center has already rushed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to assist the district administration in UP.
The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) of the central government, which met under cabinet secretary Ajit Seth to take stock of the preparedness in the wake of floods in Nepal on Saturday, has constantly been in touch with the Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments.
