Eastern Railway fights a war against vermin

KOLKATA: It's a war that Eastern Railway seems to be fighting in earnest but the sheer pressure of numbers has put it on a backfoot. Believe it or not, in 2013-14, the Rajdhani Expresses and the Poorva Express run by Eastern Railway have returned from their round trips with 902 rats on board. This, despite a concerted effort to clear the rakes of vermin before they start from Howrah. Records reveal that 110 rats were also captured from the Duronto Express rakes when they were being cleaned and checked at the carsheds. The total number of rats captured from rakes under ER was 2,823 in the last financial year. Between April and June, 2014, the number of rats captured stood at 441.

"We make all efforts to clear the rakes of rats before they start on their journeys from Howrah and Sealdah. These rats seem to crawl on board during the journey. Rodent control is undertaken in the rakes apart from pest control. For the Rajdhani Express, pest control takes place once a week. For AC coaches of other trains, pest control takes place fortnightly. In non-AC coaches, pest control takes place once in two months. Apart from this, fumigation is done once every month. I have instructed the departments involved to take steps to ensure that rats don't get into trains. After all, passengers are bound to get upset if they find rats and cockroaches moving around in the coaches," Eastern Railway general manager R K Gupta told TOI.

While inspecting the rakes at carsheds and maintenance yards, Gupta instructed officials to plug gaps under floorboards and walls to prevent rats and pests from hiding inside. He also directed that better cleanliness be maintained inside coaches and pantry cars and walls and ceilings be cleaned properly. Gupta has also asked officials to ensure that dustbins kept near the toilets are cleaned and painted on a regular basis. However, will this be enough?

"We request passengers to be a little more careful for their own sake. It is common practice among passengers to wrap garbage and leftover food in plastic packets and push these under the seats or berths. This is how rats and cockroaches are attracted into the coaches from stations or near signals where the trains stop during the journey. There have been complaints that dustbins and toilets are not properly cleaned. As per instructions from the general manager, steps are being taken for proper cleaning. Unlike what passengers think, food for all classes is not cooked in the pantry cars. Only food for First AC passengers is cooked in the pantry cars and the cutlets for other classes are fried as they would get soggy otherwise," a senior ER official said.

According to Gupta, special steps are taken to clear the rakes of vermin after they return from a round trip. "Why else would we be capturing rats and keeping records? This shows that we wish to rid the trains of rats and other pests. Other steps are also being taken to keep the trains clean," he added.
