The new XVII Corps, with its headquarters at Panagarh in West Bengal, will be fully in place with over 90,000 troops by 2018-2019 at a cost of Rs 64,678 crore. The new formation, with units spread across the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, will provide India with "some quick reaction ground offensive capabilities" against China for the first time, as was earlier reported by TOI.
Jaitely will head for West Bengal after commissioning INS Kamorta, the first of the four indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare corvettes, at Vizag on Saturday. The minister will be briefed by top Eastern Army Command officers, including station commander of Panagarh, on Sunday.
While Panagarh will have one of the two high-altitude divisions being raised under the XVII Corps, the other will be based at Pathankot.
Other units under the formation, like two independent infantry brigades and two armoured brigades, in turn, will be located at different places.
Then, there is also the plan for infrastructure development on the "northern borders" or the LAC at a cost of Rs 26,155 crore. All this will be addition to the two new infantry divisions (1,260 officers and 35,000 soldiers) already raised by the Army at Likabali and Missamari(Assam) in 2009-2010.
From the raising of XVII Corps and development of the over 5,000-km Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile to the progressive deployment of Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, spy drones, helicopters and missile squadrons in the eastern theatre, India has belatedly taken to countering China's menacing build-up of trans-border military capabilities and infrastructure all along the LAC.
