NEW DELHI: Former commerce and industry minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath on Friday criticized former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not heeding his advice to prevent the scam in 2G spectrum allocations.

He was reacting to the revelations made by former comptroller and auditor general Vinod Rai on Times Now.

Rai, talking to Times Now's Arnab Goswami, had said despite Nath and him warning the Prime Minister about the scam in the making, Singh chose to remain a mute spectator and let the scam take place.

Nath, talking to Times Now, said he was disappointed that the former Prime Minister did not act after he wrote to him on 2G. He said Singh should have acted after he warned him of the impending scam.

Nath said the way 2G spectrum was allocated wasn't transparent and it was "unfortunate" that the former Prime Minister "chose not to act" on his letter.

However, Nath said the former PM Manmohan "may have made a mistake, but the BJP is levelling absurd charges against Sonia Gandhi."

In his interview with Arnab Goswami broadcasted on Thursday, Vinod Rai had said: "All matters of importance go to the Prime Minister. And ultimately the buck stops on the Prime Minister's desk. In this particular case I found that minister of his own council who were writing to him again and again, saying that problems are, or there is talk about developments in the telecom sector, I quoted Mr Kamal Nath who is was the commerce industries minister, writing to the Prime Minister and expressing concerns about the development in the sector ... Now, all these things went to the Prime Minister."

Rai also said that if Singh had wanted he could have stopped A Raja from going ahead with the 2G spectrum allocations.

A CAG report tabled in Parliament estimated that the exchequer lost Rs 1.76 lakh crore from the 2G spectrum allocations in 2009.
