"The average earning of the labourers is decreasing with every passing day, and problems of malnutrition among them is increasingly making its presence felt," Karat said and added that less budgetary allocation to MNREGS and improper implementation of this scheme is eventually proving to be detrimental for crores of labourers in the state.
Taking a dig at the state government for its failure to initiate welfare measures for dalits, the CPIM politburo member said, "News reports pertaining to social boycott of dalits still emanate from this state, which is a cause of concern. Barring dalit-dominated villages, people (students & teachers) reportedly from upper castes do not eat food cooked by a dalit. Dalits are even barred from using a handpump for retrieving water, which is used by people from upper castes." She further stated that atrocities committed on dalits and the inability of the government to curb it simply indicates the feudal mindset of the ruling political party.
Other speakers who addressed the public also urged the state government to declare 53 districts of the state as 'drought-hit'. Other programmes affecting the people living in villages is proper sanitation. "In the absence of proper sanitation facilities, 80% of the public are forced to defecate in the open," they said.
