Though the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) invariably comes out with its forecasts for the state quite accurately, the modern system will be a kind of early warning system keeping in view alert mechanism through constant monitoring of water levels of different rivers.
Announcing the decision, Union science and technology minister Jitendra Singh on Monday said the department of earth science will also set up most modern weather forecast equipment near the Mata Vaishno Devi temple.
The new system will be set up at 'sanjhi chhat' of the shrine.
The IMD, meanwhile, said that there was no possibility of heavy rains in the state over the next three days.
"There is no warning of heavy rains for the next three days in Jammu & Kashmir. No such warning has been issued," secretary, minister of earth science, Shailesh Nayak, said.
There was forecast for heavy rainfall for the state last week, but the absence of central alert system for the state left the local authorities off-guard. The Central Water Commission (CWC), which regularly monitors water levels in different rivers across the country, keeps rivers in the state off its regular monitoring radar.
Though the local authorities keep regular watch on water level of Jhelum, Tawi and other rivers, they could not apprehend the sudden flood due to 'unprecedented' intensity of rains last week.
