Hudhud impact in Chhattisgarh as warning issued for October 12

RAIPUR: As Odisha braces for the cyclonic storm Hudhud, the metrological department has predicted heavy rainfalls and issued a warning for the Southern parts of Chhattisgarh, including Bastar, Dantewada and Sukma, on October 12.

Heavy rainfalls would also be witnessed in most parts of Chhattisgarh on October 13 and October 14 also. Talking to TOI, ML Sahu, Director, Meteorological department said the heavy rainfalls would be accompanied by strong winds, ranging from 40kms to 50 kms per hour with gusts touching even 60 kms per hour speeds.

Sahu said a warning has already been issued for the districts of Bastar, Dantewada and Sukma, which will witness heavier rainfalls than other parts of the state. He said the northern parts of the states will also witness heavy to heavy rainfalls as an aftermath of the cyclonic storm.

Even the Disaster management department has issued an alert in the state. Chief Secretary, Vivek Dhand interacted with all district collectors in the evening regarding preparations for dealing with situations arising out of heavy rainfalls.

According to experts, cyclones that form in the Bay of Bengal normally cross Odisha coast and continue to affect weather in these pockets in terms of good rain. Cyclone Hudhud is likely to make a landfall between Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Gopalpur in Odisha on the night of October 11 or early morning on October 12.

After the cyclone makes the landfall, Chhattisgarh will witness heavy rains, even though the storm would weaken by then. The untimely rains are likely to have an adverse impact on farming, as harvesting of crops is likely to get delayed, with chances of increased wastage.
