Jayalalithaa in jail: Bypolls to Srirangam assembly seat will be held in six months, CEO says

CHENNAI: More than two weeks after a special court in Bangalore unseated AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa from the Tamil Nadu chief minister's post by convicting her in a disproportionate assets case, the state election department said on Tuesday that byelections to the Srirangam assembly constituency, which she represented, would be held in six months.

The elections department has informed the Election Commission about the vacancy arising out of the conviction of the AIADMK leader in the case. "Now the Election Commission of India is awaiting a notification from the Tamil Nadu assembly secretariat on the vacancy of seat," chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar said.

The commission is empowered to conduct elections under Article 321 of the Constitution.

The commission would announce the date of bypoll, based on the notification issued by the assembly secretariat. When asked whether the EC would insist on a notification, the CEO said: "Let us not take any hypothetical questions. The EC will take a remedial action."
