Unathur and Agraharam Nattamangalam villages in Salem district and eight villages in Erode district continue their tradition of not bursting crackers on Diwali.
"If you think bursting crackers is essential for Diwali, then you can say we have not been celebrating Diwali for more than a century. Our village sacrificed the practice of bursting crackers to safeguard the bats here," said P Mahesh of Unathur village.
There is a huge banyan tree in the village and thousands of bats hang from its branches. The villagers are so concerned about the bats that they don't celebrate any of the festivals, not just Diwali.
Bats are "honourable guests" for the villagers of Agraharam Nattamangalam also. "We consider the bats our honourable guests. They have never caused us any harm. So we don't want to disturb them by bursting crackers," said M Ganesan of Agraharam Nattamangalam.
Similarly, eight villages around the Vellode Birds Sanctuary (VBS) have not been bursting crackers for the last fifteen years. "Birds from foreign countries like Australia and New Zealand visit the VBS between October and January," said S Munusamy of V Mettupalayam.
He said crackers would frighten the migratory birds and so they had stopped the bursting crackers.
The villagers would visit the VBS on Diwali and feed the birds, he added.
