KANYAKUMARI: A fishing boat with a crew of 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala has been apparently apprehended by the British navy near Diego Garcia island in the British Indian Ocean Territory.

The boat, with the registration number TN2/FV/01135/10 and owned by K Tito of Chinnathurai in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, set sail from Kochi on November 21.

The boat -- named Greeshma -- and the fishermen were apprehended by the British navy for violating the borders.

Fisheries officials in Chennai confirmed that the fishermen had been detained by the British navy and the issue had been taken up with the central government.

"The issue is with the ministry of external affairs and efforts are being taken to repatriate them," a senior official said.

Among the 14 fishermen, eight belonged to Chinnathurai hamlet, one was from Thoothoor village, two were from Rameswaram and three were from Kerala, said P Justin Antony of Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust (TNFIDET).
