PM Modi greets UN resolution on Yoga on Twitter

NEW DELHI: Barely two months after prime minister narendra Modi asked the UN to consider celebrating an international day of yoga, the UN general assembly carried the proposal with about 170 countries as co-sponsors. The proposal, put forward by India's permanent representative, Ashoke Mukerji on Thursday, was adopted without a vote. It was the highest number number of co-sponsors for any UNGA resolution ever.

Justifiably described as a decisive diplomatic victory for Modi, the decision to name June 21 as the international day is interesting - it's the summer solstice, technically known as the longest day in the year. It's also a big day for India's soft power, which has seen yoga become a global Indian export, taking a more body-mind approach to physical wellbeing.

Interestingly, neither Pakistan nor Malaysia supported the resolution, largely because Muslim clerics have declared yoga to be un-Islamic.

Modi's proposal also received overwhelming support from important nations who came forward to co-sponsor the resolution, including all five permanent members of the UN Security Council - China, France, Russia, UK and US. Over 60 per cent of Africa sponsored it as well as key Asian, European and Latin American countries including Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, South Korea, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand and the UAE.

Prime minister Narendra Modi greeted the new resolution with a tweet. "Elated! Have no words to describe my joy on the @UN declaring 21st June as 'International Day of Yoga.' I fully welcome the decision." He went on, "I have been a practicer of Yoga for years & you can't believe the positive difference it has made in my life. Yoga is the anchor of my life."

"Countless people across the world made Yoga an integral part of their lives. Congrats to them! This will inspire many more people towards Yoga," PM gushed on social media.

The president of UN general assembly, Sam Kutesa said in his welcome statement, " Today's adoption of a resolution on the International Day of Yoga with overwhelming support, as shown by the more than 170 member States that have co-sponsored it, demonstrates how both the tangible and the unseen benefits of yoga appeal to people around the world.... I congratulate the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, for this initiative whereby the international community will observe the International Day of Yoga on the 21st of June each year."

Introducing the resolution Mukerji said the practice of yoga would help humanity create a better consciousness and combat climate change. In his speech on 27 September, Modi had said, "Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being."
