VARANASI: Somara, wife of Hazari Vanbasi, was helplessly looking at her burnt hut with which all her belongings including food grains and clothing reduced to ashes after some armed goons torched the huts at Birshinghpur hamlet of low caste mushahar population in Ayodhyapur village in Lohata police station area on Thursday.

"Is thande mausam mein hum kaise rahen, kya khayen aur kaha jayen," (We don't' know how to live in such a cold weather, what to eat, and where to go), said a bewildered Somara, who lives in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Kashi. Not only Somara, but about 10 mushahar families lost their shelter in the chilly weather. They lost everything, and were forced to live in open with kids. A woman with her newly-born baby, who was shivering in cold, was looking for a safe shelter for her baby.

"Armed goons came in 7 vehicles around 11am and started thrashing us with sticks mercilessly. They did not spare even women and children," said Ramvilas, whose mud house was also set afire. Besides belongings, Rs. 2000, which he has borrowed on interest, also gutted in fire, he told TOI. A five year-old daughter of another resident Lalji sustained injury on her head, while an elderly woman sustained injury in her leg. A pregnant woman Prema Devi was also beaten by them, said the locals. "We immediately informed the police on 100 number, but they reached here after one hour," said Ramvilas.

The reason behind the arson and attack is a piece of land on which the mushahar population has been living for a long time. Birsinghpur, once backward and remotely located area, started drawing the attention of men in real state after the bridge over Varuna river was constructed that connects Harahua and Akelwa, said Ram Bachan, a local native. According to him, about 250 families of mushahar/harijan live in the hamlet for generations on this piece of barren land.

"An influential man of Koraut area wants to grab the land forcibly with the help of his goons," said Madanlal Mayura, district secretary of UP Khet Majdoor Union. He alleged that the helpless poor people are being harassed to leave the place. Most people earn their living by collecting wood or working as daily wager.

"These people have been living in mushahar basti for last 40 years on this piece of land. Presently, the matter is in the court," said the Gram Pradhan Surendra Prasad. "The matter is being investigated, and appropriate action would be taken," said the Lohata police inspector Shamsher Bahadur Singh. He, however, added that some of the local residents also created new makeshift huts outside the hamlet.
