VARANASI: Amidst the row erupted over Padma Award following the nomination of badminton star Saina Nehwal, the pain of noted vocalist Pt Chhannulal Mishra also came out for not honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country, so far.
"There are only few living musicians of Banaras Gharana including me, who are away from Bharat Ratna honour," lamented Mishra while talking to reporters here on Tuesday. Mishra, who was also one of the Navratnas nominated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Clean India Campaign, said that his contribution in propagating classical music in simple way is known to all. "For a long time musicians like him and Girija Devi have not been given place in Padma Award," he said adding, "Bharat Ratna mile ya na mile, fark nahi padata. Samman na mangunga, aur na source lagaunga" (It does not matter whether Bharat Ratna is awarded or not. I will not ask for the honour, nor go for any source for it).
Mishra, who was also one of the proposers of Modi during the nomination for the Lok Sabha election, nominated nine members for the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan on Tuesday. "What is in mind of the government is best known to it, but I will not beg for the honour," he said putting his pain in a line -"Mera to kya, khushi mein rahun ya malal mein. Tum khush raho, jahan bhi raho".
Mishra was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2010. He has also been awarded the 'Shiromani Award' of Sur Singar Sansad, Bombay; Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; Naushad Award, Yash Bharti Award of U.P Government and the Bihar Sangeet Shiromani Award.
