NEW DELHI: Former RAW chief Alok Joshi, who dealt with the kidnapping of 39 Indians in Iraq by Islamic State (ISIS), says the pull of ISIS among Indian youth through internet has been overestimated and that there is no immediate threat to India from young men joining the outfit. While interacting with media on the sidelines of an NSG event, Joshi said, "There is no widespread pull of ISIS in India. At least, we didn't see that kind of spread when I was there (in RAW).
A few stray incidents have happened and they have been tackled well." Joshi said Indian security establishment's response to youth joining ISIS had been calibrated and such youth were tactically being weaned away. Joshi was answering to questions on the threat from youth travelling to Iraq and Syria after being influenced by the idea of ISIS over the net.
Joshi seemed to echo a strong opinion within the security establishment and experts who feel that given India's demographic mix, natures of society and cultural cushions, India's reaction to those getting attracted towards ISIS should be directed towards being more correctional than punitive. Indian authorities recently identified and prevented several youth from travelling to Syria to join ISIS without taking any legal action against them. These youth were merely counseled and handed back to their parents.
Joshi, who is NTRO chairman-designate, also reacted to the recent controversy on an intercepted Pakistan boat blowing up mid sea. He said allegations of NTRO not cooperating with intelligence bureau were untrue. "Until recently, I was a customer of NTRO. I never faced any problem with it. Let me assure that there are processes in place at the cutting-edge level in the agency (NTRO). This (exchange of snoop data) is not an issue at all," Joshi said.
He, however, stressed on greater synergy among internal and external security agencies to effectively counter the threat of terrorism.
