Replying to K Gopalaiah (JDS), energy minister DK Shivakumar told the legislative assembly on Friday that though the state was facing 1400 MW scarcity, government will ensure continuous power supply during examination season.
"By April 2015 the shortfall in power is expected to be around 800 MW but we will ensure that students don't suffer because of this during the exam time. All the power generating units have been told to work more to enhance the productivity. Farmers will be requested to use irrigation pump sets more during non-peak hours," he said.
The energy department is also working towards providing 22-24 hours power supply in cities, 7 hours in three phases in the rural areas and single phase from 6pm to 6am.
"Under medium term power purchase agreement 1500 MW would be purchased. Under short term, 500 MW, 150 MW and 250 MW power will be purchased," Shivakumar said.
The minister gave details about the steps being taken by the government to improve power generation in the state and become self reliant, which include 700 MW Ballari Thermal Power Station (BTPS) unit 3 and 1600 MW Yermarus project among others.
Giving details about the solar power generation initiatives taken by the government in reply to a question by Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli (BJP), Shivakumar said those setting up solar power plants on rooftops (residences, commercial complexes, colleges among others) would be allowed to sell surplus power generated by them at the rate of Rs 9.56 per unit to Escoms (Electricity Supply Companies) without subsidy.
