KOLKATA: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee recently held a meeting with eight department secretaries at Nabanna in order to bring coordination among the departments and to give a direction to develop and to uplift the self help groups under the national rural livelihood mission (NRLM).

State panchayat department minister Subrata Mukherjee who was also present in the meeting said that it was discussed in the meeting as to how the different departments related to self help group work like fisheries, animal resources development, panchayat, MSME and others could work together to develop the self help groups and their activities through proper coordination. Senior officials said that there will be more meetings on this issue soon so that a concrete plan could be formulated.

The government is giving much stress on implementing the NRLM scheme which entails mobilizing the rural poor to work in self-help groups in the villages so that they can earn their livelihood, with the help of bank loans. The government is also trying to facilitate skill development for these self help groups. Various handicrafts fair is being held across the state where the self help groups are encouraged to bring in their own hand made crafts.
