CHENNAI: A transgender, who was born Pradeep Kumar but became Pratika Yashini after a sex-reassignment surgery, has moved the Madras high court to update her passport, and school and college certificates.

She sought the court's help to change her name in the certificates and passport and to be identified as a female in these documents.

Justice T S Sivagnanam has asked authorities to take action on her representation within a period of eight weeks.

A postgraduate diploma holder in computer application and a student of Ayurvedic medicine now, Pratika said she realised some changes in her when she was studying at the high secondary level. "I came to understand that I am not being normal as any other male. I could feel my physical features drifting towards feminine character," she said.

Besides being confused by the sudden sex change, she faced difficulties on family front. She consulted a doctor who confirmed that she was indeed a transgender.

She then met similar people through service organizations and later underwent a sex reassignment surgery at Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai in November 2011.

In October 2013, she changed her name as Pratika Yashini from Pradeep Kumar, and got it published in government gazette as well. She had a stint with an NGO, Thozhi, which works for transgender people, and then started doing a course in Ayurveda.

Pritika said she wanted to get her documents and certificates updated to pursue higher studies and for employment.

Despite the sex reassignment surgery and change of name which had been duly notified, institutions and companies still went by her original name, she said, adding: "The society is still illiterate enough to accept me or similar persons as transgenders."

Though she had submitted two representations to authorities concerned, changes in her certificates identifying her as a female and as Pritika had not been done, she said, requesting the court to issue appropriate orders to the authorities.

Authorities refused to receive or acknowledge her representations, she said, adding, "I have been made to run from pillar to post."

She wanted the court to direct the authorities to make necessary changes in all her records and certificates, indicating her present name.
