BENGALURU: Infosys contributed the most financially towards the statue of Mahatma Gandhi that was unveiled in London's iconic Parliament Square on Saturday.

The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, the trust formed to raise funds to put up the statue, says on its website that Infosys donated 250,000 pounds (Rs 2.3 crore) and the amount is the highest so far. The Trust had the objective of collecting a total of 1 million pounds. Infosys contributed a quarter of that.

It was previously reported that Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy and family donated 200,000 pounds (Rs 1.9 crore) to the Trust. So directly and indirectly, Infosys has accounted for nearly a half of the Trust's requirements.

Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka described Gandhi as a visionary leader who "deeply understood the importance of freedom to be innovative and accomplish our goals using as core enabler a tool from the context of our times." Sikka noted that Gandhi encouraged Indians to spin and weave their own cloth - using the traditional spinning wheel or charkha - and wear clothing made from this homespun fabric. "The charkha became both the tool and symbol of a national revolution built on the tenets of human creativity and entrepreneurship. Much like computing technology, today, serves as the modern Indian's charkha - amplifying individual abilities, and collective capability, making extraordinary makers out of ordinary people, helping enterprises in the UK and the world over weave dreams into reality," he said.

Infosys said it was also a major supporter of the initiative to put up a statue because of its objective of fostering and celebrating the India-UK relationship.

Murthy was quoted at the time of his donation as saying: "Mahatma Gandhi was someone who demonstrated the tremendous power of leadership by example. His courage and commitment are an inspiration and I am delighted that his statue will stand in such a respected setting."

Other major donors included Rahul Bajaj (200,000 pounds), Lakshmi Mittal and family (100,000 pounds), NRI hotelier Vivek Chadha (100,000 pounds) and Sun Mark director Rami Ranger (100,000 pounds).

The nine-foot-high bronze statue, created by sculptor Philip Jackson based on photographs of Gandhi at 10 Downing Street during a visit in 1931, will be the last to be placed on Parliament Square. Statues of Britain's war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill and South African anti-apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela are already on the square.

On Saturday, Murthy and Mittal were present at the unveiling, together with others like finance minister Arun Jaitley, and Amitabh Bachchan.
