GUWAHATI: Nagaland Police on Sunday said that medical examination on the Naga woman has confirmed that she was raped. The police have arrested 18 persons in connection with the incident of dragging out a Dimapur-based businessman Sayed Farid alias Sharif Khan from jail and lynching him to death for allegedly raping his Naga wife's cousin sister.

Four days after the incident, Dimapur, the commercial hub of the hill state situated on the plains adjacent to Assam is still tense as the state government moved in the Assam Rifles to Dimapur besides blocking all mobile internet services to prevent circulation of the video images of the lynching.

The district administration also clamped a total curfew following rumours that some people planning to take out a candlelight service at the Clock Tower in the middle of the town on Sunday evening where Farid Khan succumbed to the lynching on Thursday last.

Nagaland Police's Dimapur Range IGP Wabang Jamir told TOI, "The medical examination conducted on the victim confirms prima facie that she was raped. Some injuries have been found on her hand and doctors have sent samples to forensic lab for tests. The investigating officer has also sent her undergarments for forensic tests. She has told the doctor that she was raped twice."

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday had said that unofficial reports with him suggest that there was no rape and he called upon Nagaland government to publish the facts.

"The situation in Dimapur is tense and we have deployed 13 companies of state reserve police, two companies of Crpf and seven companies of Assam Rifles, covering all sensitive points at Dimapur. We have provided security cover at all places of worship of the minorities," Jamir said.

The IGP said there is no conspiracy connected with the Farid Khan's lynching. "Initially it was the student community, who became agitated against the alleged rape but at some point miscreants took over and whole incident took the ugly turn. We are yet to verify to which group or groups the arrested person belong," Jamir said.

The IGP added that the police and civil administration is building confidence among the non-Naga population at Dimapur. "There is no apprehension raised by them and there is no exodus of any non-Naga people from Dimapur," he said.
