Centre Plans To Upgrade 300 Medical Institutions to Colleges: Nadda

NEW DELHI: The Centre plans to strengthen medical education in the country by upgrading 300 medical institutions, Union health and family welfare minister JP Nadda said on Friday.

He added, 100 such institutions will be upgraded as medical colleges, which will add 10,000 new doctors every year.

Nadda said the government is making efforts to resolve regional imbalances in medical education facilities in the country. "The northern and eastern parts of the country still have inadequate facilities compared to southern and western parts," he said in a statement released from Thiruvananthapuram. Nadda was there to inaugurate various projects at the Government Medical and Dental Colleges.

Nadda said Kerala government has proposed four places to the Centre for the planned AIIMS in the state. "A central team would visit these places and take a final decision," he said.

Severe dearth of doctors and paramedical staff as well as monitoring of quality medical education are major challenges facing the health care sector.

The minister also underlined the need to give more emphasis for research and development in health sector.

Nadda said the success story of Hindustan Latex and Life Care Limited was a model for all public sector undertakings in the country. While most PSUs were seeking financial help from the Centre, HLL has been continuously making profit, he said.

"The fact that HLL exports its products to 170 countries is a matter of pride for the nation," he said.

He also visited the factory complex of HLL at Peroorkada.
