The Supreme Court on Friday rule that the chief minister and not the chief justice of the high court, will have primacy in selecting a person for these posts subject to conditions.
Interacting with media on the sidelines of inauguration of a five-day state level NSS camp at Surathkal near here on Saturday, Santosh Hegde said the state government now certainly has no excuses not to appoint a Lokayukta or a UPA lokayukta.
Incidentally, the state is without a head to the anti-graft body since September 19, 2011 when Justice Shivaraj Patil resigned from the post after charges that he violated norms to get land allotted.
Opining that SC judgment should offer solace to Justice K Chandrashekaraiah, whose appointment as Upa Lokayutka, a bench of Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Madan B Lokur quashed on Friday, he said, as there is no adverse remark against Chandrashekaraiah, the government is free to consider his name for the post again. The state government had nominated Chandrashekaraiah to the post vide notification on January 21, 2012.
To complaints of 'saffronisation' of education, especially from BJP ruled states, he said such complaints will always be there. "Education is being other colours as well," Santosh Hegde said, adding that it is natural for critics of the BJP to raise the bogey. "The real concern on the other hand should be the crass commercialization of education and how the governments in power intend to combat that and make education affordable to masses," he said.
