Deoband seminary wants to set up English-medium school

LUCKNOW: Leading centre for Islamic studies, Darul Uloom Deoband Waqf (DuDW) has sought the help of the Uttar Pradesh government in setting up an English-medium school in the state.

Often tagged as "conservative" for its "hardline" approach in religious education, the seminary's move is being seen as a significant attempt to strike a balance between religion and modern education.

In his letter addressed to SP national president Mulayam Singh Yadav and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, DuDW deputy director Maulana Sufiyan Qasmi has demanded that the government should help the community in setting up a full-fledged English-medium school on a par with leading English-medium schools in the country. The letter was handed over to an SP leader from Saharanpur, Ashu Malik, on Monday night. Malik is expected to hand over the letter to his party president on February 14.

Maulana Sufiyan is believed to have stated in the letter that DuDW was planning to set up the school with the aim of helping Muslim students to keep pace with the competition in the outside world.

DuDW was formed out of Darul Uloom Deoband (DuD). Both are respected institutions in the field of Islamic studies. They share the same syllabus, were founded by the same sect and survive on donations from the community. But DuD does not accept any government help, unlike DuDW. The two institutes have realized the need to reach out to the non-Muslim community in India to allay growing misgivings about Islam.

To this effect, DuD has taken up a series of initiatives since last September, including publication of books on Islam in Hindi and English, and setting up of a stall at the Delhi National Book Fair last September for the first time.

Asked about the motivation behind the DuDW letter, Ashu Malik told TOI that the Muslim community has noticed a growing need to familiarize the world about Islam and its related aspects to counter misgivings about the religion. He said once an English-medium school is established, DuDW would seek the help of other organizations in and outside India to set up similar institutes in UP and beyond.
