Cyclone Phailin: Wave height to be 8.5m in Odisha

HYDERABAD: The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois), under the ministry of earth sciences, Government of India in its latest bulletin issued on Saturday evening said gale winds speed reaching 210-220kmph gusting to 235 along and off coastal districts of Odisha would prevail at the time of landfall of Cyclone Phailin.

The forecast was issued at 4pm and will be valid for the period 4.30pm on 12-10-2013 to 4.pm on 14-10-2013.

It is forecasted that the wave conditions off the Odisha coast will be very rough (>4.0m) and become gradually much higher by evening hours of 12th October 2013. The wave height is forecasted to be maximum (nearly 8.5m) between Gopalpur (Ganjam District) and Saharabedi (Jagatsingpur District) during 11.30pm on 12 October, 2013. The swell wave heights vary in the range of 3 to 5m. The current speeds vary between 100-150cm/sec.

Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls (25cm) would occur over Odisha during the next 48 hrs.

Storm surge with height of 3 to 3.5 metre above astronomical tide would inundate low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha during landfall.

Andhra Pradesh: It is forecasted that the wave conditions in the sea off north Andhra Pradesh would be very rough (> 4.0 m) and will become much higher during the evening hours on 12th October 2013. The wave height is forecasted to be maximum nearly 7m between Baruva (Srikakulam District) and Ichchapuram (Srikakulam District) during 4.30pm on 12 October, 2013. The swell wave heights vary in the range of 3 to 5m. The current speeds vary between 100-150cm/sec.

Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls (25cm) would occur over north coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 48 hrs.

West Bengal: It is forecasted that the wave conditions will be rough (2.5 m - 4m) to very rough (> 4.0m) off West Bengal coast during the above period. The wave height is forecasted to be maximum (nearly 5m) between Digha (East Midnapore District) and Fraserganj (South 24 Parganas District) during evening hours of 12 October, 2013. The swell wave heights vary in the range of 3 to 4m. The current speeds vary between 100 and 130cm/sec.
