CHANDIGARH: Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday stayed the arrest of Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, actors, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in connection with the FIR registered against them in Jalandhar pertaining to their movie "Ram Leela".

Justice Jitender Chauhan of the HC has passed these orders after hearing the petition filed by Bhansali, Ranveer and Deepika Padukone.

When the case came up for hearing on Thursday before HC, the counsel for the Bollywood stars told the court that it was strange that the Jalandhar Police registered the FIR without even ascertaining the facts before the movie could be released or even granted certificate by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

It was further argued that the grievance of the complainant in this case was that the movie's title, the trailer and photographs were highly objectionable and offended the religious sentiments of general public who believe in Hindu mythology.

He argued that the story of the movie was contrary to the title, as it had nothing to do with Lord Rama's life and the Delhi high court has already decided that no organization or an individual can claim to be the sole interpreter of Hindu religion and be the sole proprietor of names of Hindu Gods.

Further mentioning the Delhi high court observations, the counsel for the Bollywood stars stated that while deciding the similar issue, the Delhi high court has also made it clear that the effect of the words, title and scenes will have to be adjudged from the standard of a reasonable man and not from weak and vacillating mind.

On Tuesday, director and producer of the movie, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, actor Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone had moved the HC against the registration of case against them in Jalandhar district of Punjab. Jalandhar Police had booked Bhansali, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukonee on September on the basis of a complaint filed by one Lalit Kumar. The FIR was registered under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code.

The complainant had alleged that the contents of the forthcoming movie Ram Leela, scheduled to be released on November 15, are highly objectionable and offends the religious sentiments of the public believing in Hindu mythology.
