The state Congress leadership is aware that in the absence of any wave for a UPA-III government; an aggressive BJP using Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as their trump card and discontent among its rank and file in the Karnataka party unit, the onus of delivering a good number of candidates is going to be difficult for chief minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president G Parameshwara.
Siddaramaiah's Ahinda (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and dalits) thrust in his programmes has led to an impression among the two dominant castes Lingayats-Vokkaligas, that they are being marginalized. The CM has not filled five vacancies in his cabinet apprehending that it would lead to a fresh bout of dissidence, which is something, he cannot afford close to the Lok Sabha polls. It's for the same reason appointments to boards and corporations have not been made.
In this background, Yeddyurappa going back to the BJP will certainly not be in the Congress favour. The 71 year-old Lingayat strongman had indirectly helped the Congress in the May 2013 elections to win constituencies that were the BJP's stronghold.
Quitting the BJP and launching the Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) on December 9, 2012, Yeddyurappa reduced his erstwhile party's tally from 110 in 2008 to just 40 seats. He spoilt the BJP's prospects in 29 constituencies most of them being in north Karnataka, where the Lingayats are dominant.
"I have shown my strength. I have made BJP realize what it is without me," he had said after the results were declared. Though the KJP secured just six seats, it finished second in 36 constituencies and secured 30.68 lakh votes (9.83%).
In the May elections, of the 3.12 crore votes polled, the Congress garnered 1.14 crore votes (36.55%), the JD(S) got 62.69 lakh votes (20.09%) followed by the BJP with 62.32 lakh voters (19.97%). In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress six victories (tally increased by three seats in bypolls) were from its known strongholds---Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Chikballapur, Bidar, Gulbarga and Kolar. The Congress is planning to regain other constituencies particularly the three prestigious ones in Bangalore.
