CHENNAI: In his bid to garner support for a united Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy met Tamil Nadu chief minister and the AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and DMK chief M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Wednesday.

The Jagan juggernaut rolled into Chennai, causing traffic snarls and chaos. The city walls were splashed with posters and banners, hailing him. Vehicular traffic was affected in some parts of the city as Jagan moved in a convoy of cars.

Sources said Jayalalithaa was not impressed with the banners and flags his supporters had erected in several parts of the city to welcome him. Senior officials ordered to pull down the banners in some parts of the city, including in Guindy and near Marina Beach.

Jagan called on Jayalalithaa at the secretariat in the afternoon in the company of six of his party leaders and held discussions for about 20 minutes. Later in the day, he met Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence. Karunanidhi's son M K Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi were present during the 45-minute meeting.

Speaking after the meeting with Karunanidhi, Jagan said he had sought to prevail upon the leaders to amend Article 3 of the Constitution. It was up to them to decide on that issue, he added. "Today it is Andhra, tomorrow it could be their state. Everyone who believes in democracy should support this cause," he said.

Asked about the response he got from Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi, he said, "Both of them were kind enough to listen to me. Both of them do feel that it's a very important issue and needs to be addressed."

Jagan claimed that his party would win 30 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and his party would decide who would be the next prime minister. "Now we have only three MPs. In 2014, I am going with my stand for the election. That polls will be a referendum of the people on the bifurcation of Telangana," Jagan told reporters.

Jagan recalled his meeting with BJP president Rajnath Singh and leaders of other parties like Shiv Sena and Left parties.

Jaganmohan had been making a tour of the country to meet national leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Naveen Patnaik. He has been meeting leaders even as it is unclear whether a bill for the creation of a separate Telangana would be brought in the winter session of the Parliament, commencing on Thursday.
