MLA defends wife seen in leopard-print coat, says it had 'fake spots'

DEHRADUN: The alleged leopard skin coat worn by a Congress MLA's wife during an assembly session had "fake spots" and was a 'Made in China' product, the legislator claimed, and accused the woman who registered a complaint with the wildlife authorities of "conspiracy".

MLA Pranav Singh Champion showed the coat, which his wife Devyani Singh had allegedly worn during the assembly session last month, at a press conference and said it had "fake leopard spots." He claimed that Gauri Maulki, who had complained to the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) against Devyani, was acting on the behest of his political rival.

Maulki, on her part, castigated the state wildlife department for not confiscating the coat and not conducting an inquiry into the matter. She claimed that Champion had shown a different coat at his press conference and that he was making false allegations against her out of "sheer desperation".

Threatening to file a defamation case against the animal activist, Champion added that the Facebook account, on which photographs of his wife in the coat had been pasted, was also fake.

Maulki, the member secretary of 'People for Animals', slammed the state wildlife department for not taking action despite strict orders from WCCB as well as not confiscating the coat.

She claimed that the coat shown to the press was not the one which was photographed during the assembly session last month. "I have photographs and CDs of the original coat taken by the press. The photographs of coat shown by him (Champion) today clearly show that the coat has been changed," she claimed.

On the fake Facebook account, she said, "I will write to the DGP to find out the IP address of the alleged Facebook account, which will reveal the truth. My organization never took donations from a government department/official. Champion is making false allegations out of sheer desperation."

Champion was earlier embroiled in a controversy over his fondness for guns and firing in public. Last September, he allegedly injured two persons at a party organized at cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat's residence.
