'Yeran Naidu sympathy factor may play havoc with Congress'

SRIKAKULAM: While the YSR wave ensured that the Congress broke TDP's stronghold in Srikakulam district in the 2009 general elections, this time around there seems to be no wave in support of either Congress or YSR Congress party.

TDP, which was sitting pretty in the Lok Sabha constituency with four consecutive wins from 1996 to 2004 by late K Yerrannaidu, seems all set to bounce back to power in this northern-most coastal district in the upcoming polls scheduled to be held on May 7, this year.

The Srikakulam Lok Sabha constituency (SLSC) is a combination of seven assembly segments, including Srikakulam, Amudalavalasa, Tekkali, Palasa, Narsannapeta, Pathapatnam and Ichchapuram.

According to political pundits, the main reason for a setback to the Congress in the upcoming polls could be the bifurcation effect as well as the lack of any memorable contributions by sitting MP and Union minister of state for information technology and communications Killi Krupa Rani, during her tenure since 2009.

However, for YSRCP the main drawback could be the contestant. As YSRCP failed to get a local candidate, it is in serious negotiations with New Delhi-based Reddy Santhi, daughter of Palavalasa Rajasekharam, former Congress Zilla parishat chairman in Srikakulam district. Though Santhi lacks political experience and has been away from the district as her husband is an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, the YSRCP top brass is willing to support her candidature as she belongs to the Kapu community, which is dominant in Srikakulam district, YSRCP sources revealed.

When contacted, YSR Congress convener for Srikakulam district, Dharmana Krishna Das, elder brother of former state minister Dharmana Prasada Rao who joined YSRCP Congress recently, said that the party was taking its time to select the right candidate for the Srikakulam seat. "Five to six people, including Dharmana Prasada Rao, were shortlisted but we have almost decided on Reddy Santhi because of the caste factor, which we hope will help us bag the seat. Our only target is the TDP as we are not worried about the the Congress party or its contestant," Krishna Das told TOI. According to Das, the Kapu community is the largest in the district, followed by the Velama and Kalinga communities.

Meanwhile, a senior YSR Congress leader, who is close to YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, revealed that the party doesn't have too much hope of bagging the Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat as they were aware of a strong wave in favour of the TDP's likely contestant, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, son of Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, who died in a road accident on November 2, 2012.

"Apart from the sympathy votes due to the death of his father, Ram Mohan is presently settled in the district after having completing his studies at London. Though he is a new to politics, he appears to have won people's heart in the district," said a YSRCP leader on conditions of anonymity.

Another senior politician and retired Congress leader said the people voted for Congress candidate Killi Krupa Rani in 2009 not because of her charisma but because of the YS Rajasekhara Reddy wave. "There is no doubt that Congress will not be able to retain the Srikakulam LS seat this time. The competition will mainly be between YSRCP and TDP and the chances of TDP bagging the seat are brighter because of the candidate first and the party second," the senior leader predicted. There is no chance for Kiran Kumar Reddy's new party Jai Samaikhyandhra, as they have no option except Korla Bharati, he added.

It may be mentioned that six candidates, including Yerrannaidu from TDP and Killi Krupa Rani from Congress contested for the seat in the 2009 elections, where Krupa Rani emerged the winner by bagging 3,87,694 votes against Yerran, who got 3,04,707 votes.

Likely contestants (officially yet to be announced by party high commands)

Killi Kruparani from Congress

Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu from TDP

Reddy Santhi from YSR Congress.
