Rahul's charisma on wane in Amethi

AMETHI: Probably the first time, for Rahul Gandhi it wasn't a hands-down win in Amethi. A drastic fall from 3.7 lakh vote share in 2009 to slightly more than a lakh in 2014 Lok Sabha election says it all.

By 6pm at the two counting centres in Gauriganj, final figures for Salon, Tiloi, Gauriganj, Amethi and Jagdishpur had though brought some relaxation to Congressmen, (another reason definitely was that BJP people had started deserting the centre), the ear to ear grin was missing from their faces. Most of them were happy that theyfinally won.

Excluding the count for 37 booths of Aaliyapur and postal ballots, Congress got bagged 406496 votes and a lead of 119736 votes over BJP. Salon assembly contributed maximum to Rahul's win and gave him lead of 33097 votes over BJP, followed by Amethi (26953 votes), Gauriganj (21949 votes), Jagdishpur (14241 votes) and Tiloi (11249 votes). BJP got 297760 votes.

Eversince the counting started at 8am at the centres, Congress workers were not that hopeful as they should have been given their tall claims of romping to victory with a huge margin this time again. The initial reports of BJP candidate Smriti Irnai leading from Jagdishpur made it tough for most of them to put up a brave face. By 3pm, victory margin was not very dependable -- 45346. It was only in the evening once a lead of 58115 votes in the eleventh round of counting was declared that most of them heaved a sigh of relief.

"It's a comfortable lead now," said one of them. Althrough the morning the victory margin was staggering. Sonia Gandhi's huge lead in Raebareli was another morale booster for Congressmen in Amethi.

It's no denying that Congress had to really push hard to get a lead over rivals in Amethi. It required everything from Sonia Gandhi's emotional appeal saying she has "offered" her son to Amethi people in the rally she held in more than a decade in Amethi. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had almost made Amethi her home to peddle the case of her brother to voters in Amethi.

All this still could not keep BJP much behind. In Salon, the saffron outfit got 5,5014 votes, in Amethi 46453 votes, in Gauriganj 63320 votes, in Jagdishpur 66969 and in Tiloi 66004 votes.

In Dalapur Khurd (booth no. 246), place where Modi held his Amethi rally, BJP polled more votes 318 than Congress — 211. Besides at Bastidei (booth no. 181) where Congress president of Amethi, Yogendra Mishra, is a voter, Congress lost to BJP. It got 265 votes against BJP's 347.
